LANCASTER, Pa. - The University of Rio Grande archery team opened the 2025 portion of its schedule with 11 top three finishes at the Lancaster Archery Classic, which wrapped up on Sunday at Spooky Nook Sports.
The event is the largest indoor archery event on the east coast and the only event that the RedStorm will shoot in which does not have an overall team placement.
"We had a very successful weekend," said Rio head coach Jonathon Clemins. "This tournament offers one of the most exciting archery tournament formats in the world, with a 60-arrow qualification round, followed by head-to-head matches that culminates in a shoot-your-way-to-the-top grand finale. Three of our archers made the finals stage, was on the live broadcast, and won several thousand dollars."
Sophomore Danielle Pollard (West Pittston, PA) took first place in the Collegiate Women's Fixed Pins division, while five others garnered runner-up performances - freshman Colton Green (Bloomfield, OH) in Compound Collegiate Men, junior Zoe Woods (McHenry, IL) in Compound Women's Open, junior Braydin White (Zanesville, OH) in Collegiate Men's Fixed Pins, graduate senior AJ Clements (Glennville, GA) in Recurve Collegiate Men and senior John Sarazin (Onalaska, WI) in Barebow Collegiate Men.
Third-place finishers from Rio Grande included senior Matthew Russell (Loganville, GA) in Compound Collegiate Men, freshman Matteja Metcalf (Piedmont, SC) in Compound Women's Open, senior Alicia Aviles (Tamarac, FL) in Collegiate Women's Fixed Pins, freshman Scott Fisher (Mauk, GA) in Barebow Collegiate Men and sophomore Morrighain Nyer (Pottsville, PA) in Barebow Collegiate Women.
"Just to note the depth of talent we're developing here at Rio, nearly half of our team earned their way to an individual National Podium finish," Clemins said. "We also had numerous podium finishes in the Collegiate division as well."
Rio Grande is slated to return to action on Friday and Saturday at the USA Archery Indoor Nationals in Owensboro, Ky.
