PENN LAIRD, Va. - You know that you've got one of the top teams in the country when you're not happy with a top three finish.
The University of Rio Grande archery team posted a third place finish among the 72 schools participating in the USA Archery Indoor Nationals, which wrapped up a two-day run on Saturday at the Rockingham Recreation Center.
Texas A&M won the team championship with 142.50 points, while the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) was second with 126.83 points and the RedStorm placed third with 103.33 points.
"Coming off a National Championship win, this wasn't the level we expected, plain and simple," said Rio Grande head coach Jonathan Clemins. "Illness and other factors challenged us, but high-performing teams are built to handle that. We weren't where we needed to be and that starts with me. The good news is that we've learned exactly what needs to change, and we'll be better because of it.
Individually, Rio's scoring finishes included graduate senior AJ Clements (Glennville, GA), who was second in Men's Olympic Recurve; sophomore Colton Green (Bloomfield, NM), who was second in Men's Compound; freshman Adam Curran (Paris, KY), who was second in Men's Fixed Pins; sophomore Tanner Boyd (Lebanon, OH), who was third in Men's Olympic Recurve; freshman Lea-Lynn Gregorio (Macon, France), who placed fifth in Women's Olympic Recurve; junior Bronson Ormes (Bellevue, KY), who took fifth place in Men's Barebow; junior Danielle Pollard (West Pittston, PA), who was seventh in Women's Fixed Pins; freshman Nathan Jackson (Rockford, IL), who was eighth in Men's Compound; and senior Alicia Aviles (Tamarac, FL), who placed eighth in Women's Fixed Pins.
In team play, the RedStorm got a trio of runner-up finishes - Clements and Boyd in Men's Recurve, Curran and senior Braydin White (Zanesville, OH) in Men's Fixed Pins and the duo of Pollard and Aviles in Women's Fixed Pins - while Green and Jackson were third in Men's Compound and the duo of Gregorio and freshman Audrey Khan-Arevalo (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) were third in Women's Recurve.
Rio Grande also got a third-place outing from Clements and Gregorio in Mixed Olympic Recurve.
The RedStorm will return to action at The Vegas Shoot, March 26-29, in Las Vegas, Nev.
