RIO GRANDE, Ohio - With a recent victory over Ball State University, the University of Rio Grande's Overwatch Team Black recorded the Esports program's 150th victory.
Rio's Esports program plays an average of 50-60 games per year, depending on how many teams it has competing in a given year and how far those teams progress in the post-season.
This season, three of the RedStorm's four teams in the Esports program - Overwatch Red, Overwatch Black and Tekken - made the cut.
"I'm so proud of every player that went through this program," said Devin McDonald, Overwatch Coach/Player and Esports Assistant Director. "Starting 1-9 and on the brink of being cut to 54-11 now and with the 150th win just shows me and the guys how much work we've done. And we want to keep going - let's get 200!"
With an overall record of 150-112 (.572) over the past four years, Rio's Esports teams have enjoyed impressive success. Many of those wins have come from the Overwatch and League of Legends teams, both of which have either been runner-up or champions for Rio Esports throughout the years.
In addition to the exploits of the Overwatch teams, notable achievements include League of Legends - coached by Chase McClay - with a standout record of 26-4.
Additionally, Rio's teams in Rainbow Six, Rocket League, Valorant, CS:GO, Tekken and Smash Bros. have all contributed to the program's success, securing three other championships and seven other playoff appearances.
"I'm very proud of all they've accomplished, not just this year, but throughout the history of this program," said program director Mackenzie Halley. "It's great to see this program continue to grow and evolve, discovering new ways to succeed every season. With Esports still being a relatively new area for many schools, especially in southeastern Ohio, I'm glad to be part of recruiting and helping students prepare for their future while having fun playing games."
Those who may be interested in becoming part of the program and learning about scholarship opportunities should contact Halley.
