ANDERSON, S.C. - The University of Rio Grande put together two limits on the final day of competition and all three of its teams were able to walk the stage at the ACA Bass Pro Shops Collegiate Bass Fishing Series National Championship, which took place out of Lake Hartwell's Green Pond Landing.
Leading the way for the RedStorm was the freshmen duo of Noah Cremeens (Gallipolis, OH) and Coen Davis (Jackson, OH), who placed 151st for the event with 15.63 lbs. and was the only team to bring a limit of fish to the scales each day.
Another freshman team - Cameron Burgess (Oxford, OH) and Tyler Eggers (Jackson, OH) - placed 168th overall with 11.73 lbs., while rounding out the event was the duo of sophomore Zackery Burroughs (St. Paris, OH) and junior Alexander McCarty (Bloomingburg, OH), who placed 182nd in the field of 197 with a haul of 8.74 lbs.
"Although it wasn't the results we were seeking for the event, we had a few good days of practice from each of our teams and it was an amazing opportunity - a great learning experience and development opportunity for our anglers," said Rio head coach Tom Sutton. "Lake Hartwell is known for its nomadic Blueback herring forage and it tested our anglers this past week because this is a type of fishery that over half our guys have never fished before. I look forward to our next visit there in the Fall as I know that the guys will be a little more comfortable and use what they learned this past week to dial things in for a more desired outcome."
Sutton also offered thanks to the team's title sponsor, Malone's Marine in Ironton, Ohio, for getting one of the team's boats in quickly for some work before the trip and allowing one of our teams to compete.
He also thanked the Redstorm's parent following this week and our followers at home keeping up with the anglers' exploits.
The Redstorm will next be back in action a little closer to home on East Fork Lake to fish the Ohio Bass Nation Collegiate State Qualifier Championship, June 7-8.
The winning team from the event will advance to the 2025 Strike King Bassmaster College Championship, July 10-12, on Cherokee Lake in Jefferson City, Tenn.
