Rio cracks top five at LTU, KCU

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande varsity men's golf team carded a runner-up finish at the Lawrence Tech University Spring Shootout, which concluded its two-day run on Tuesday at The Players Club At Woodland Trails.
     The RedStorm had a 54-hole total of 33-over par 897, which was 18 shots back of Indiana University East in the team competition. The Red Wolves took the top spot at 15-over par 879.
     Bethel (IN) University was a distant third place in the 12-team field at 50-over par 914.
     IU East's Sam Firebaugh captured medalist honors at 3-under par 213.
     Rio Grande's top individual performance came from freshman Pablo Gutierrez (Puebla, Mexico), who placed sixth at 6-over par 222.
     Also representing the RedStorm was freshman Rafael Martinez (Bahia Blanca, Argentina), who tied for ninth at 9-over 225; senior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who was 11th at 10-over 226; freshman Pedro Torrens (Neuquen, Argentina), who was part of a tie for 15th place at 13-over par 229; and junior Juan Carlo Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), who was among three players tied for 23rd place at 17-over 233.
     Rio Grande's reserve squad also competed in the Kentucky Christian University Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Grayson Lake State Park.
     The RedStorm finished fifth among the 13 competing squads with a 36-hole total of 57-over par 633.
     Johnson University won the team title at 42-over par 618, finishing two shots ahead of runner-up Midway University. Bluefield (Va.) University was third at 51-over 627, while Johnson's "B" team was fourth at 55-over par 631.
     Bluefield's Jacob Mitchell had the low score individually at 4-over par 148.
     Rio's top showing came from freshman Conner Roe (Rio Grande, OH), who took 10th place at 10-over par 154.
     The remainder of the RedStorm's contingent included junior Connor Ingels (New Haven, WV) and freshman Floris Everwijn (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), both of whom tied for 14th place at 13-over par 157; freshman Wyatt McCune (Coolville, OH), who was part of a four-way tie for 26th place at 18-over par 162; freshman Valerio De Angelis (Rome, Italy), who was among six players tied for 33rd place at 21-over 165; freshman Joel Jepson (Norrtalje, Sweden), who was part of a five-way tie for 40th place at 24-over 168; and freshman Deo Alvarez (Veracruz, Mexico), who was part of a quartet tied for 61st place at 37-over par 181.
     Rio Grande's varsity is scheduled to return to action on Friday at the Indiana University Kokomo Spring Invitational.
     The RedStorm reserves hit the course again on Monday at the Ohio Christian Invitational in Circleville, Ohio.
