Rio grabs opening round lead at RSC Championship

     DANIELS, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande holds a one shot lead over Midway University following Sunday's opening round of the River States Conference Men's Golf Championship at The Resort at Glade Springs Resort.
     The RedStorm finished the day at 16-over par 304, while the Eagles carded a 17-over total of 305. Indiana University East was hot on the heels of both in the 11-team field, closing the day at 19-over par 307.
     Individually, Midway's Gage Cooper fired a 1-under par 71 and holds a two-shot lead over West Virginia University Tech's Sean Cooper. Oakland City's Jose Vidal and IU East's Noah Mulford are tied for third at 2-over par 74.
     Rio Grande's top rounds of the day came from junior Juan Carlo Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain) and freshman Rafael Martinez (Bahia Blanca, Argentina), both of whom completed the round in a seven-way tie for fifth place at 3-over par 75.
     Also representing the RedStorm was senior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who had a 4-over 76 to finish in a tie for 12th; and the duo of freshman Pablo Gutierrez (Puebla, Mexico) and freshman Pedro Torrens (Neuquen, Argentina), who were part of a four-way tie for 18th place at 6-over 78.
     Round two is set for Monday morning beginning at 10 a.m.
