Rio men finish 3rd in RSC Championship

     DANIELS, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande posted a third place finish in the River States Conference Men's Golf Championship following Tuesday's final round of the 54-hole event at The Resort at Glade Springs Resort.
     The RedStorm carded a tournament total of 61-over par 925 and finished eight shots back of champion Indiana University East at 53-over 917.
     Midway University took third in the 11-team field at 56-over par 920.
     Individually, Midway's Gage Gregory and Oakland City's Jose Vidal grabbed medalist honors by finishing at 1-under par 215. Midway's Gage Gregory was the runner-up at 2-over par 218.
     Rio Grande's top individual showing came from senior Rodrigo Portilla (Sevilla, Spain), who finished sixth at 12-over 228.
     Also representing the RedStorm was freshman Pablo Gutierrez (Puebla, Mexico), who was 10th at 16-over par 232; junior Juan Carlo Gil Perez (Malaga, Spain), who placed 14th at 18-over 234; and the duo of freshman Rafael Martinez (Bahia Blanca, Argentina) and freshman Pedro Torrens (Neuquen, Argentina), both of whom tied for 17th place at 20-over 236.
     The top five finishers were considered First Team All-Conference, while positions 6-10 were Second Team and finishers 11-15 were Third Team.
     The league also announced its major award winners and its Champions of Character team.
     Gregory was named the RSC Player of the Year, while IU East's Noah Mulford was tabbed Newcomer of the Year honors and Jeff Williams of IU East was selected as Coach of the Year.
     Members of the Champions of Character team best represent the NAIA's Champions of Character program and its five core values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership and Sportsmanship.
     Rio's representative on the team was junior Connor Ingels (New Haven, WV).
