OWENSBORO, Ky. - Estevao Goncalves started the scoring for the University of Rio Grande and later netted the final goal of the day for the RedStorm in a 3-1 triumph over Brescia University, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference men's soccer play at Kamuf Park.
Head coach Scott Morrissey's club, which recorded a third consecutive victory, moved to 4-3-3 overall and 2-0 in the RSC as a result of the win.
The Bearcats fell to 2-7-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the loss.
Goncalves, a sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, got the scoring underway on an unassisted marker with 15:58 left to play in the opening half.
Brescia proceeded to net the equalizer with 28:07 remaining in the contest on an unassisted score by Santiago Garcia Peirat, but the deadlock didn't last long.
Rio Grande took what proved to be a lead it would never relinquish a little less than five minutes later when junior Lucas O'Donnell (Leeds, England) found the back of the net off of a touch by freshman Matthew Donaldson (Birmingham, England).
Goncalves then put the win on ice for the RedStorm with another unassisted tally with 12:19 showing on the clock.
Rio Grande doubled up its host in total shots, 20-10, while also enjoying a 12-5 cushion in shots on frame.
Freshman Samy Hamou (Paris, France) stopped four shots in goal for Rio.
Pau Gelabert had nine saves in a losing cause for the Bearcats.
Rio Grande is back in action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Indiana University Columbus for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Evan E. Davis Field.
