Mason, Lightner lead Rio men at Marshall Classic

     HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Troy Mason set a pair of new school records on Saturday to lead the performance of the University of Rio Grande men's track and field team at the Marshall Alumni Classic, hosted by Marshall University at the Chris Cline Sports Complex.
     Mason, a sophomore from Grenville, Grenada, set new school records in both the 200-meter dash (21.53) and the 400-meter run (48.80).
     Mason's time in the 200 was the fifth-fastest in the NAIA this season and also met the "B" qualifying standard for the upcoming NAIA National Championships. His time in the 400 is the ninth-best in the NAIA.
     Mason finished second in the 200, while winning the 400.
     The RedStorm also got a win from graduate senior Kyle Lightner (Peebles, OH) with his time of 4:15.80 in the mile run. His mark currently is the seventh-quickest in the NAIA.
     Junior Tyler Jenkins (Barnesville, OH) ran third in the same race with a personal-best time of 4:17.42, giving the duo three of Rio's top four times in the event over the past 20 years.
     Rio Grande had a number of other top 10 showings over the course of the day.
     Sophomore Rowen Gerlach (New Haven, WV) was second in the shot put (14.48m) and sixth in the weight throw (14.03m), while junior Spencer Harris (Gallipolis, OH) was third in the high jump (1.90m) and fifth in the long jump (6.61m). Harris also set a personal-best time of 22.67 with his 11th place outing the 200-meter dash.
     Junior Trevon Houston (Cleveland, OH) had a pair of top 10 performances by finishing third in the 400-meter run (50.0) and 10th in the 200 (22.66), while junior Hunter Blagg (Pedro, OH) was sixth in the triple jump (12.09m) and eighth in the 300-meter (42.54).
     The RedStorm's other notable finishes included freshman Keegan McKinney (Baltimore, OH), who was third in the shot put with a heave of 14.24m; graduate senior Chase McClay (McDermott, OH), who placed fifth in the 400 with a time of 50.99; sophomore Kasy Science (Marietta, OH), who was fifth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:00.68; freshman Anton Meinlschmidt (Weibeyoke, Germany), who took sixth place in the men's 3,000 with a time of 9:05.91; freshman Logen Justice (Lancaster, OH), who was sixth in the high jump at 1.85m and seventh in the 300 with a time of 39.24; freshman Anthony Portis, Jr. (Huber Heights, OH), who was seventh in the 400 after crossing in 51.89; freshman Duncan Kogei (Eldoret, Kenya), who was seventh in the mile run at 4:24.62; junior Daunevyn Woodson (Gallipolis, OH), who was seventh in the long jump with a leap covering 6.50m; senior Marshall Jackson (Zanesfield, OH), who placed seventh in the weight throw at 14.01m; senior Andrew Skaggs (Minford, OH), who was seventh in the triple jump with an effort of 11.75m; sophomore Ashton Beverly (Chillicothe, OH), who was eighth in the 3,000 with a time of 9:16.44; freshman Wes Taylor (Lancaster, OH), who placed ninth in the mile run with a mark of 4:25.19; sophomore Nick Knight (Proctorville, OH), who placed ninth in the shot put with a personal-best showing of 13.27m; senior Ryan Weber (Bidwell, OH), who was ninth in the weight throw with a toss of 13.42m; and sophomore Brayden Adams (Ironton, OH), who finished 10th in the 400 with a time of 56.34.
     Rio's 4x400 relay team - comprised of Houston, Taylor, McClay and Lightner - took third place in a time of 3:30.11.
     Two other RedStorm athletes didn't crack the top 10, but did set new personal-best marks.
     Junior Mugisha Pomossene (Dayton, OH) finished 21st in the mile run with a PR mark of 4:42.72, while sophomore JJ Larue (Chillicothe, OH) set a PR in the 3,000 with a time of 9:33.29.
     The meet, which included NCAA Division I schools Marshall University and Morehead State, as well as a number NCAA Division II and NAIA schools, was not team scored.
     Rio Grande sophomore Zach Whitley (Wheelersburg, OH) also competed in the USATF 20k Open Racewalk in Santee, Calif. on Sunday and finished seventh with a time of 1:49.12 in the co-ed event.
     Rio Grande is set to return to action on Friday at the Youngstown State University Invitational.
