YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men's indoor track & field team enjoyed a big day at Friday's YSU Collegiate Invitational presented by Southwoods Health at the Watson and Tressel Training Site.
The RedStorm established five new school records, three NAIA Championship qualifying marks and a handful of personal-best efforts against competition from all three NCAA levels and other NAIA squads.
For the second consecutive outing, sophomore Troy Mason (Grenville, Grenada) led the way for head coach Matt Paxton's squad.
Mason won the 60-meter dash, erasing the school record he'd just set the week before with a time of 6.72. The time, which was the fifth-fastest in the NAIA this season, met the "A" qualifying standard for the NAIA national championship and missed setting a new facility record by just .02.
Mason also erased his week-old school record in the 200-meter dash and recorded a time faster than the school's outdoor record, finishing in 21.19. It was the fourth-fastest time in the NAIA this season, while also hitting the "A" qualifying standard.
Graduate senior Kyle Lightner (Peebles, OH) set a new school record in the 800-meter run, finishing second in a time of 1.54.75. The time is the seventh-fastest in the NAIA this season.
Junior Tyler Jenkins (Barnesville, OH) also set a new school standard in the 3,000-meter run after finishing second with a time of 8:30.95 - the seventh-best time in the NAIA this year.
The final new school record on the men's side came in the 4x400 relay from a quartet which included Mason, junior Spencer Harris (Gallipolis, OH), graduate senior Chase McClay (McDermott, OH) and junior Trevon Houston (Cleveland, OH), which finished second and hit the "B" qualifying mark in a time of 3:17.91 - the sixth-fastest time in the NAIA this year.
Rio Grande also recorded 15 other Top 10 performances - 12 individually and three relay units - during the meet.
The list of noticeable individual outings included sophomore Kasy Science (Marietta, OH), who was fifth in the 800 with a time if 1:56.15; sophomore Ashton Beverly (Chillicothe, OH), who was sixth in the 800 after crossing in 1:56.46; Harris, who was seventh in both the high jump (1.90m) and long jump (6.35m); freshman Keegan McKinney (Baltimore, OH), who was seventh in the shot put with a toss of 14.82m; senior Marshall Jackson (Zanesfield, OH), who took seventh in the weight throw at 14.80m; junior Daunevyn Woodson (Gallipolis, OH), who was eighth in the long jump with an effort of 6.32m; sophomore Rowen Gerlach (New Haven, WV), who placed eighth in the shot put with a heave covering 14.78m; senior Andrew Skaggs (Minford, OH), who was eighth in the triple jump with an effort of 11.80m; senior Triston Malmstrom (McArthur, OH), who finished eighth in the weight throw at 13.85m; freshman Duncan Kogei (Eldoret, Kenya), who was 10th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:45.02, the second-fastest time in school history; and freshman Wes Taylor (Lancaster, OH), who was 10th in the 800 with a time of 2:00.20.
