Rio Grande Sports Information
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Troy Mason re-wrote two school records - again - and Tyler Jenkins set a new Rio mark of his own to lead a handful of athletes representing the University of Rio Grande in PNC Lenny Lyles Invite, which took place Friday and Saturday, at the Norton Healthcare SLC.
Mason, a sophomore from Grenville, Grenada, finished fifth in the seeded 200-meter dash in a new school record time of 21.10.
The mark, which met the "A" qualifying standard for the upcoming NAIA Championship, currently ranks fourth nationally.
Mason also finished 10th in the seeded 400-meter dash with a school record and personal-best time of 48.57 - a time which met the national "B" qualifying standard.
Mason reached his mark competing against athletes from a number of NCAA Division I athletes.
Jenkins, a junior from Barnesville, Ohio, finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a school- and personal-best time of 14:29.31.
His time - which met the "A" qualifying standard - currently ranks No. 5 nationally and marked the first sub-14:30 finish in program history.
Four other Rio athletes set new personal-best marks during the meet.
Freshman Duncan Kogei (Eldoret, Kenya) placed 15th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:01.39, junior Spencer Harris (Gallipolis, OH) was 31st in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.18, junior Trevon Houston (Cleveland, OH) finished 31st in the 200-meter dash after crossing in 22.50 and graduate senior Chase McClay (McDermott, OH) was 47th in the 200 with a time of 23.06.
Meanwhile, the majority of the RedStorm roster was competing in Wittenberg University's Steemer Showcase, Saturday morning, at The Steemer in Springfield, Ohio.
Junior Daunevyn Woodson (Gallipolis, OH) had the lone win for Rio, taking first in the long jump with an effort of 6.79m.
The RedStorm had 10 other Top 10 performances individually.
Freshman John Young (Leroy, OH) took fourth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.77, missing senior teammate Kyle Lightner's (Peebles, OH) school record from a week earlier by .02. He also became the fourth Rio athlete to finish under the old school record time in the last year.
The other top showings included freshman Logen Justice (Lancaster, OH), who placed fourth in the high jump with an effort of 1.88m; sophomore Rowen Gerlach (New Haven, WV), who was fourth in the shot put with a heave of 15.33m; senior Andrew Skaggs (Minford, OH), who was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.58m, seventh in the triple jump with an effort of 12.02m and ninth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.94; freshman Dalton Ferguson (Huntington, WV), who was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.79; freshman Keegan McKinney (Baltimore, OH), who was sixth in the shot put with a mark of 14.58m; sophomore Ashton Beverly (Chillicothe, OH), who was seventh in the 800 with a time of 1:55.50; and junior Hunter Blagg (Pedro, OH), who was eighth in the triple jump with a leap covering 11.87m.
