RedStorm men enjoy successful start to season

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Tyler Jenkins and Rowen Gerlach led the efforts of the University of Rio Grande men's indoor track and field team at a trio of meets over two days to open the RedStorm's 2025-26 schedule.
Jenkins, a senior from Barnesville, Ohio, hit the NAIA "B" qualifying standard by finishing 13th with a time of 14:39 in the 5,000-meter run at Friday's Grand Valley State Holiday Open in Allendale, Mich.
Senior Mugisha Pomossene (Dayton, OH) set a new personal record in the same race, finishing 16th in a time of 15:28.
Gerlach, a junior from New Haven, W.Va., set a new meet record in the shot put, placing second with a toss of 15.51m (50'10.75").
He also set a new meet record and personal-best mark with an effort of 14.84m and a 13th place showing in the weight throw.
Also on Friday at the YSU Icebreaker in Youngstown, Ohio, Rio Grande had five Top 10 finishers.
Michael Francois, who was running unattached, took first place in the 400-meter run with a time of 46.64 and was second in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 21.63.
Sophomore Keegan McKinney (Baltimore, OH) finished seventh in the shot put with a heave of 51'11", while junior Trevon Houston (Cleveland, OH) was eighth in the 400 with a time of 49.12 and Logan Morris placed ninth in the high jump with an effort of 5'6.5".
On Saturday at the Marshall University Opener, personal records were set in the 5,000-meter run by junior Kasy Science (Marietta, OH), who finished 11th in a time of 15:23.59, and junior Ashton Beverly (Chillicothe, OH), who was 16th with a mark of 16:14.70.
Rio Grande is slated to return to action after the holiday/semester break at the Marshall University Invitational on Jan. 10 in Huntington, W.Va.
