Jenkins, Montes set new record for Rio men

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Tyler Jenkins broke a long-standing school record and hit an "A" qualifying standard in the process, while Angel Montes broke a Rio Grande Athletic Hall of Famer's record as well in leading the University of Rio Grande men's track & field team to a list of Top 10 showings at four different events over the weekend.
     Jenkins, a senior from Barnesville, Ohio, was among the team members competing at the Lee University Fast Break Athletics Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn. and was second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 29:47.93, which met the top qualifying standard for next month's NAIA National Championships and broke the previous school record set in 1977 by Archie Mundy.
     Montes, a freshman from Mexico, made his mark at the United States Athletic Track & Field National Race Walk Championship's 5,000-meter mixed walk at the Athletes in Action Track Complex in Xenia, Ohio. He finished third in a time of 21:23.21, breaking the previous school record owned by Matt Boyles and hitting the "A" standard in the process.
     Also at Lee, freshman Jahfa Woodley (Trinadad and Tobago) and sophomore Anton Meinlschmidt (Weibeyoke, Germany) hit "B" standards in the 800-meter run and the 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively.
     Woodley finished 10th in the 800 with a time of 1:51.88, while Meinlschmidt was 10th in the steeplechase with a time of 9:22.46.
     Sophomore John Young (Leroy, OH) also had a 10th place finish of his own in the 1,500-meter run, recording a time of 3:55.06.
     Joining Montes in Xenia was graduate senior Carter Lipscomb (West Union, WV), who also hit the qualifying mark in the race walk after finishing sixth in a time of 24:43.60.
     Rio Grande had a trio of first-place finishes among the contingent who took part at the Concord University Open Track Invitational in Athens, W.Va.
     Senior Trevon Houston (Cleveland, OH) won the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.85, while freshman Moritz Seigel (Leipzig, Germany) won the 1,500-meter run by crossing in 4:12.55 and freshman Josh Alexander (Fredericktown, OH) took top honors in the pole vault after clearing 3.75m.
     The RedStorm posted a dozen more Top 10 marks at Concord.
     Freshman Micah Balsmeyer (Walbridge, OH) was second in the 1,500 with a time of 4:14.47; freshman AbDoul Bah (Columbus, OH) was fourth in the 1,500 after crossing in 4:20.13 and 10th in the 800 with a time of 2:06.19; freshman Bjorn Kjonstad-Prestvik (Trondheim, Norway) posted a time of 15.65 to finish fourth in the 110-meter hurdles and was sixth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.85; freshman Chase Hinton (Baltimore, OH) was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.58; Siegel, who placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a mark of 2:04.40; Alexander, who grabbed fifth place in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:04.53; freshman Noah White (Crown City, OH), who was fifth in the pole vault (3.00m) and seventh in the triple jump (11.23m); freshman Koltyn Bowen (Batavia, OH), who was sixth in the high jump with an effort of 1.70m; and freshman Brody King (Sunbury, OH), who finished ninth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:29.68.
     As a team, Rio Grande finished fourth at Concord with 73 points.
     Bluefield (WV) State won the team title with 126 points, while host Concord was second (114 pts.) and unattached athletes were third at 113 points.
     In the Northeast Ohio Open in Akron, Ohio, sophomore Keegan McKinney (Baltimore, OH) placed eighth in the Shot Put with a heave of 15.29m.
     Rio Grande is slated to return to action on Friday and will send athletes to both the Otterbein Twilight in Westerville, Ohio and the Centre Outdoor Twilight in Danville, Ky.
