Pomeroys take down RedStorm men

     ST.MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - Host St. Mary-of-the-Woods College got off to a quick start and never looked back, posting a 25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23 win over the University of Rio Grande, Friday night, in River States Conference men's volleyball play at the Knoerle Center.
     The host Pomeroys improved to 23-4 overall and 5-3 against RSC foes.
     Rio Grande, which had a modest two-game winning streak snapped, dropped to 10-9 overall and 2-6 in league play with the loss.
     The RedStorm bolted to a 6-2 lead in set one, but SMWC responded by winning seven of the next eight points to grab a 9-7 lead.
     The Pomeroys eventually took the lead for good with a 4-0 run which snapped a 14-all tie.
     Rio never led in set two after the hosts used a 6-1 spurt to break an early 3-3 deadlock, but the RedStorm did manage to avoid a sweep by closing the third stanza on a 9-1 run which wiped out a 20-16 deficit.
     Set four proved to be a nip-and-tuck affair throughout, with SMWC scoring the final two points of the contest to snap a 23-23 tie and finish off both the set and the match.
     Rio Grande finished with a respectable .274 attack percentage (55 kills, 21 errors, 124 swings), but the Pomeroys were better at .330 with 50 kills and only 16 errors in 103 total attacks.
     Bentley Meyer and Tyler Duranceau led SMWC with 14 kills each, while Christian Green added 12 of his own. Duranceau also had a team-best eight digs to go along with a solo block and two block assists.
     Ethan Rickets added 42 assists in the winning effort and Noah Boyett had two solo blocks and a block assist.
     Sophomore Daniel Rivas (Valle Del Cauca, Colombia) led Rio Grande with 16 kills and a team-high nine digs, while junior Otavio Tonoli (Campinas, Brazil) had 13 kills to go along with a solo block and four block assists.
     Sophomore Camilo Murillo (Cali, Colombia) and senior Mitch Bartecki (Valparaiso, IN) had 33 and 12 assists, respectively, in a losing cause.
     Rio Grande will close out its weekend road swing on Saturday afternoon at Oakland City University.
