GATLINBURG, Tenn. – After dropping lopsided decisions to Cumberland (Tenn.) University and Keiser (Fla.) University, the University of Rio Grande men's wrestling salvaged a parcel of positive by defeating Truett McConnell (Ga.) University in Saturday's Smoky Mountain Duals at the Rocky Top Sports World.
Freshman Josh Morrison (Reynoldsburg, OH) got the RedStorm off to a good start against TMU by pinning Tate Thomas at 1:57 of their 125-pound matchup, but the Bulldogs won each of the next three bouts to take a 13-6 lead.
Senior Mackandle Freeman (Point Pleasant, WV) snapped the slide by posting a 7-1 decision over Chase Bond at 157 pounds, but it took wins by freshman John Walters (Ashland, KY) at 174 pounds, senior Justin Bartee (Point Pleasant, WV) at 184 and a forfeit win by senior Bruce Wagers (Cincinnati, OH) in the 285-pound division to secure the come-from-behind triumph.
Walters recorded a 15-3 major decision over Miles Mason, while Bartee won a 15-0 technical fall over Christian Anderson at 3:33.
Wagers scored Rio's lone points in a 42-6 loss to Cumberland, topping Evan Dixon by fall just 34 seconds into their heavyweight showdown.
Freeman, Bartee and Wagers all collected victories for the RedStorm in their 40-14 loss to Keiser.
Freeman topped Shai Keery by technical fall, 16-1, at 5:35 of their 157-pound bout, while Bartee won a 7-3 decision over Rocco D'Ascoli at 184 pounds and Wagers pinned Daguy Massillon at the 6:27 mark of their 285-pound matchup.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Friday at the Battle of the Bluegrass in Corbin, Ky.
