Rio Grande Sports Information
CORBIN, Ky. - Senior Bruce Wagers led the efforts of the University of Rio Grande men's wrestling team at Friday's "Battle in the Bluegrass", posting four wins in as many matches and capturing the title in 285-pound division.
Wagers, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, was one of four RedStorm grapplers to participate in the event. The remaining three - freshman Jaydon DeHart (Ashland, KY) at 133 pounds, senior Kaylin Foust (Charlotte, NC) at 157 pounds and freshman Braeden Buxton (Mechanicsburg, OH) at 285 pounds - all went winless in their respective double-elimination brackets.
Wagers won each of his contests by fall.
The day began with a triumph over Evan Smigelski from Defiance (Ohio) College at the 1:22 mark, before knocking off Jeff Blair of Siena Heights (Mich.) University at 1:25 of their championship quarterfinal matchup.
It took just 28 seconds for Wagers to pin Michael Yerian of Marian (Ind.) University in the semifinals, while the championship match against Benjamin Vega-Sanchez of Simpson (Calif.) finished eight seconds quicker.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to the mat at the Fairmont State Invite in Fairmont, W.Va. on January 3.
