Rio men open with 4th place finish at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande men's cross country team - at least a portion if it - got the 2025 season underway on Friday evening, finishing fourth in the Thundering Herd XC Invite hosted by Marshall University at the YMCA Kennedy Center Course.
The RedStorm, who were ranked 25th in the NAIA preseason coaches' poll, totaled 97 points, finishing behind Ohio University (24), host Marshall (38) and rival Shawnee State (79).
"We sat seven of our top nine returners," said Rio head coach Matt Paxton. "The race at Indiana Wesleyan will be big for us next week and our upperclassmen are focusing on that."
Rio's top finish came from sophomore Anton Meinlschmidt (Weibeyoke, Germany), who placed 12th with a 5k personal best mark of 15:37.
Also representing the RedStorm was freshman Micah Balsmeyer, who was 23rd with a time of 16:11; freshman Josh Alexander, who placed 24th in a time of 16:16; sophomore David van Kuik (Utrecht, The Netherlands), who was 27th after crossing in 16:37; sophomore John Young (Leroy, OH), who was 28th after recording a time of 16:39; freshman Nathan Ward, who was 29th with a mark of 16:45; junior Zach Whitley (Wheelersburg, OH), who finished 32nd in a time of 16:59; freshman Ian Kohls, who placed 35th in a time of 17:05; freshman AbDoul Bah, who took 36th place with a time of 17:09; sophomore Jacob Faught (Georgetown, OH), who finished 38th in 17:10; freshman Gage Renison, who was 39th after crossing in 17:12.07; junior JJ Larue (Chillicothe, OH), who grabbed 40th place in 17:12.57; freshman Jaxson Immell, who was 43rd in 17:25; sophomore Caleb Hines (Chillicothe, OH), who placed 44th in 17:27; freshman Brody King, who was 45th after crossing in 17:32; Tyler Hill, who was 52nd with a time of 18:17; freshman A'Ziah Jenkins, who was 53rd in a mark of 18:32; junior Jayden Dunlap (Gallipolis, OH), who was 55th after crossing in 19:12; and sophomore Wyatt Webb (Gallipolis, OH), who finished 58th with a time of 19:40.
Ohio University's Charlie Slates had the top individual time of 15:01.
Rio Grande's return at Indiana Wesleyan comes on Friday night with race time set for 6:40 p.m.
