Entering his 11th season as an assistant coach with the University of Rio Grande women’s basketball team, Brandon Bias has been a cornerstone of the RedStorm’s success. Known for his exceptional recruiting acumen, up-tempo offense style and player development skills, Bias has played a pivotal role in shaping the program into a consistent contender.
A native of Hewett, W.Va., Bias first joined the RedStorm coaching staff in 2012, bringing with him a passion for basketball and a keen eye for talent. Helping the team earn a then KIAC championship in 2014-15.
After a brief hiatus, he returned to Rio Grande in the 2017-18 season as the recruiting coordinator, a role in which he has excelled. His efforts have been instrumental in assembling some of the most talented recruiting classes in program history, leading to back-to-back 30-win seasons.
Under his watch, the RedStorm achieved a program-best 32 wins during the 2021-22 season and advanced to the Round of 32 in the NAIA National Tournament. The following year, Rio Grande continued its dominance with 30 wins and a Round of 16 appearance. Most recently, Bias helped guide the team to a third consecutive RSC championship with a 26-6 record for the 2023-24 season.
Bias’s recruiting success is reflected in the accolades earned by his players. He has helped recruit 14 first-team All-Conference players and 12 second-team All-Conference players. During his tenure, Rio Grande players have also garnered River State Conference Player of the Year honors five times and been named to the NAIA All-America squad on five occasions.
Before returning to Rio Grande, Bias spent a season at the University of Pikeville as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. There, he helped guide the team to a historic 26-9 record and a trip to the school’s first-ever FAB FOUR appearance at the NAIA National Tournament. His contributions included coaching one NAIA All-American and four Mid-South All-Conference players, as well as recruiting a future All-American.
Bias began his coaching career at Buffalo High School in Buffalo, W.Va., where he served as head coach for four seasons. His leadership led to a 17-6 record in 2011, earning him the Kanawha Valley Coach of the Year award from the Charleston Daily Mail.
At Rio Grande, Bias’s responsibilities extend beyond recruiting. He is actively involved in scouting, day-to-day operations, and player development, ensuring that the RedStorm are well-prepared for every challenge they face.
Bias holds a Bachelor’s Degree from West Virginia State University (2011) and a Master’s of Education from the University of Rio Grande (2013). His dedication to the sport and his players continues to drive the success of the RedStorm program.
