RedStorm women shine at OBC No. 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande had three of the top five individual finishers and placed third as a team in the women's division of Saturday's Ohio Bowling Conference No. 1 Tournament at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace.
Jaelyn Hughes posted a runner-up showing, while Payton Goodman and Lina Fernandez finished fourth and fifth, respectively for the RedStorm in the field of 128 participants.
Hughes, a junior from Indian Lake, Ohio, took down 617 pins over three games for an average of 205.7 and finished one pin behind medalist Olivia Fehlner from the University of Northwestern Ohio. She was also responsible for the RedStorm's single-game high score with a 235 in round two.
Goodman, a junior from Cardington, Ohio toppled 588 pins over three games and Fernandez - a sophomore from Mechanicsburg, Pa. - tallied 581 pins in three rounds.
The 14-team tournament consisted of three rounds of team play and 12 baker games.
Northwestern Ohio took the team title with 4,859 pins, while Muskingum University (4,684 pins) edged Rio (4,678 pins) for runner-up honors.
"We had a 149-pin lead over UNOH after the three rounds of team play," said Rio Grande assistant coach Phil Karl. "They overtook us in the second round of bakers and Muskingum caught us in the last baker game."
Also representing the RedStorm in the tourney was junior Julie LeMaster (Chillicothe, OH), who finished 25th with 495 pins in three games and sophomore Melanie Liming (Georgetown, OH), who placed 29th with 488 pins over three rounds.
Rio Grande also competed in the junior varsity division and finished seventh among the nine competing teams with 3,267 pins.
Shawnee State won the JV team crown with 3,917 pins, with Mount Vernon Nazarene placing second with 3,863 pins and Ohio State University taking third with 3,808 pins.
Rio's top score among its reserve players was by senior Megan Foltz (South Point, OH), who was 36th overall with 474 pins in three games.
Others rolling for the RedStorm were freshman Keerstin Shaver (Vinton, OH), who was 86th with 341 pins in three rounds; sophomore Addison Jones (Winchester, OH), who was 88th with 340 pins in three games; freshman Ariah Zellner (Crestline, OH), who took down 338 pins over three games for 89th place; and sophomore Kendall Harrod (Chillicothe, OH), who placed 99th with 294 pins over three rounds.
Rio Grande is slated to return to action on Nov. 1 and 2 at the Bowlero Southern in Marietta, Ga.
