Rio women place 18th in second of two Vegas events

     LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Rio Grande women's bowling team finished 26th in one tournament and 18th in another to close out its pre-Christmas, cross country trip to the City of Lights.
     The RedStorm's 26th place finish came in the 42-team Glenn Carlson Invitational, which wrapped up its two-day run on Friday.
     Rio toppled 6,753 pins as a team.
     Calumet College of St. Joseph took the team title with 7,733 pins, while Trine University (7,664 pins) edged Ottawa (Kan.) University (7,646 pins) for runner-up honors in the tourney, which attracted schools from all across the country.
     The top score among the 271 individuals belonged to Shelby Logston of Coe College, who knocked down 1,773 pins over eight games for a 221.6 average.
     Rio's best individual outing was produced by junior Julie Lemaster (Chillicothe, OH), who finished with 1,448 pins over eight games for a 62nd place finish.
     Also rolling for the RedStorm was sophomore Lina Fernandez (Mechanicsburg, PA), who finished 79th with 1,385 pins; senior Hannah Halstead (Delaware, OH), who was 92nd with 1,362 pins in eight rounds; junior Jaelyn Hughes (Indian Lake, OH), who took 99th place with 1,341 pins in eight rounds; junior Payton Goodman (Cardington, OH), who claimed 151st place after taking down 1,102 pins in seven rounds; and senior Megan Foltz (South Point, OH), who was 271st with a 115 in her only game.
     Fernandez had the team's top single-game performance with a 205 in the opening round.
     The RedStorm wrapped up their trip on Sunday by finishing 18th in the 41-team Collegiate Shootout. The two-day event included five rounds of team play and 16 baker rounds.
     Rio Grande, which finished with 7,294 pins, moved up from 21st place after the opening day of team play.
     Morningside University won the tourney with 7,741 pins, edging runner-up St. Vincent College by 11 pins. Ottawa (Kan.) University was third with 7,674 pins.
     St. Vincent's Savannah Douglass finished atop the list of 244 competitors with 1,059 pins over five games for a 211.8 average.
     Goodman led Rio Grande individually, taking 46th place with 918 pins over five games for a 183.6 average. She also had the team's top single-game effort with a 244 in the final round.
     The remainder of the RedStorm ledger found Hughes, who finished 72nd with 885 pins in five rounds; Fernandez, who was 86th with 866 pins over five games; Halstead, who was 159th with 678 pins in four games; Lemaster, who placed 169th with 651 pins over four rounds; and Foltz, who was 223rd with 282 pins in her two games.
     Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Jan. 22 at the Ohio Bowling Conference Tournament No. 3 in Columbus, Ohio.
