Rio's Kerns hits qualifying mark in season opener

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women's indoor track and field team enjoyed a nice start to its 2025-26 season, recording a national qualifying mark and a new school record over the course of three different weekend competitions.
On Friday at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open in Allendale, Mich., senior Amarissa Kerns (Lancaster, OH) hit the qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championships with a time of 17:29 and a second place finish in her heat of the 5,000-meter run.
Also on Friday at the YSU Icebreaker in Youngstown, Ohio, sophomore Kylie Montgomery (Coal Grove, OH) set a new school record with a time of 58.73 in the 400-meter run. She finished 13th overall.
Rio Grande had one Top 10 showing on the weekend with sophomore Becka Cadle's (Bidwell, OH) seventh place finish in the pole vault at YSU with an effort of 3.20 meters.
The RedStorm is scheduled to return to action after the holiday/semester break at the Marshall University Invitational on Jan. 10 in Huntington, W.Va.
