Spohn hits qualifying standard at Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Becca Spohn posted a runner-up finish while hitting the national "B" qualifying standard in the 5,000-meter race walk to lead the University of Rio Grande women's track and field team in the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational, which concluded its three-day run on Saturday at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Spohn finished in a personal-best time of 28:08.50, easily surpassing the "B" standard of 29:51 for a spot in the NAIA National Championships, which are set for May 20-22 in Asheville, N.C.
Rio Grande had nine other individual Top 10 performances at the meet.
The list of superlatives included senior Amarissa Kerns (Lancaster, OH), who placed third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:18.95; freshman Delana Jenkins (Barnesville, OH), who was third in the 5,000-meter race walk after crossing in 36:19.38; freshman Briana Nelson (Chillicothe, OH), who finished fourth in the 5,000 race walk with a time of 36:19.39; freshman Grace Heffernan (Patriot, OH), who was fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:31.48; graduate senior Mackenzie McCarthy (Akron, OH), who took fifth place in the 5,000 race walk at 39:40.99; sophomore Kylie Montgomery (Coal Grove, OH), who finished eighth in the 400-meter dash at 58.50; junior Laura Hamm (South Point, OH), who was eighth in the mile run at 5:14.99; freshman Camryn Huck (Beverly, OH), who took ninth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:26.57; and freshman Hannah Henderson (New Paris, OH), who placed 10th in the triple jump with an effort of 9.66m.
Rio's 4x800 relay team - comprised of freshman Joleigh Nott (Gallipolis Ferry, WV), Hamm, freshman Marley Kreischer (Oak Hill, OH) and Kerns - finished fourth with a time of 9:42.99, the second-fastest mark in program history.
As a team, the RedStorm tied for 17th place in a field sprinkled with NCAA Division I schools with 13 points.
The University of Connecticut finished first with 147.5 points, while the University of South Carolina was second at 108.33 points and Coastal Carolina University was third at 95 points.
Rio Grande returns to action next Friday and Saturday at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
