Rio's Hamm records pair of runner-up finishes

     RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Laura Hamm ran to a pair of runner-up finishes, while Amarissa Kerns and Marley Kreischer also had second place outings to lead the efforts of the University of Rio Grande women's track and field team at a pair of events over the weekend.
     A contingent of athletes participated in the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invite hosted by Virginia University Lynchburg in Lynchburg, Va., while others went to the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Outdoor Open host by Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio.
     In Lynchburg, Hamm finished second in both the 800-meter run (2:15.51) and the 1,500-meter run Invite division (4:45.08).
     The South Point, Ohio junior was .8 seconds off the school record in the 800.
     Kreischer's runner-up outing also came in the Open division of the 1,500-meter run. The Oak Hill, Ohio freshman posted a time of 5:13.68.
     The event at Lynchburg was not team scored.
     Kerns was among those competing at Cedarville and posted her runner-up performance in the 5,000-meter run. The Lancaster, Ohio senior posted a time of 17:29.82.
     Rio Grande had two other Top 10 showings at Cedarville.
     Sophomore Kylie Montgomery (Coal Grove, OH) placed eighth in the javelin throw with a toss covering 31.54m, while freshman Brandy Shular (Winchester, OH) was ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:59.02.
     The RedStorm finished in a tie for 17th place in the team competition with nine points.
     Ashland University won the team title with 133 points, while host Cedarville (96 pts.) and Wayne State, Mich. (75.5 pts.) rounded out the top three.
     Rio Grande will split its squad again when returning to action next Friday.
     Some team members will be at the Golden Eagle Invitational in Charleston, W.Va., while other will be part of the Oliver Nickoloff Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
