Rio's Evans win title at JCU Open

     UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women's wrestling team collected one championship and podium finishes for each of its three participants in Sunday's John Carroll University Open at the JCU Athletic, Wellness and Events Center.
     Freshman Alexandria Evans (Barboursville, WV) breezed to the championship at 103 pounds, posting a perfect 3-0 mark.
     Evans won by technical fall over Kyler Lamb of Mount Union, 10-0, in the quarterfinal round before advancing to the title match by pinning John Carroll's Taylor MacAdam at 2:31 of their semifinal bout.
     Evans also won the championship by fall, pinning Combat School's Timi Coles at 1:57.
     Freshman Paige Russell (Kettering, OH) took runner-up honors in the 160-pound division.
     After getting an opening round bye, Russell pinned Heidelberg's Maggie Milbery at 1:50 of their quarterfinal matchup before posting a 13-0 technical fall win over Mount Union's Hailey Rose-Caldwell in the semifinals.
     In the title bout, Russell came up on the short end of a 10-0 technical fall result to Alexandria Alli of USOPTC Women`s Resident Freestyle.
     Annalis Ortez-Pierce posted a fourth-place showing at 138 pounds.
     The sophomore from Portland, Ore. won each of her first two matches by fall - over Christina Paluzzi of Alfred (NY) State at 1:01 and over Ilani Jones-Wallace from Mount Union at 4:43 - before being pinned just 16 seconds into her semifinal round match with Nora Mooney from host John Carroll.
     Ortez-Pierce rebounded to pin Alfred State's Brooke Walsh (Alfred State at 1:13 of their consolation semifinal before being pinned by Ryen Allen of Alma at 1:36 in the third-place match.
     Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday at the Lindsey Wilson Open in Columbia, Ky.
