RIO GRANDE, Ohio - After surrendering control of their own destiny in the River States Conference men's soccer race with a less-than-stellar outing at West Virginia University, the University of Rio Grande got a much-needed rebound effort at home on Saturday night.
Hugo Ferreira scored one goal and assisted on another as the RedStorm blanked Midway University, 2-0, in a league contest at Evan E. Davis Field.
Rio improved to 6-4-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the victory.
The Eagles dropped to 3-9-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the RSC.
The RedStorm set the tone early, outshooting its guests, 10-2, and scoring both of its markers in the opening half.
Ferreira, a sophomore from Paris, France, got the scoring underway with a goal off of a touch from freshman Will Perry (Crewe, England) with 17:15 gone in the contest.
Ferreira then assisted on a marker by junior Tommy Munoz Salazar (San Jose, Costa Rica) with 12:33 remaining before the intermission to set what proved to be the final score.
Midway did manage two of its three shots on goal after halftime, but failed to find the back of the net.
Rio finished with a 16-6 edge in shots, an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 cushion in corner kick chances.
Freshman Samy Hamou (Paris, France) got the win in goal for Rio after entering the game with 6:08 left in the first half when senior starter Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil) was ejected after being issued a controversial red card.
de Campos stopped one shot before being disqualified.
Landon Sorrell went the distance in goal and took the loss for Midway.
Rio Grande returns to action on Thursday night at rival Shawnee State.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Shawnee Turf in Portsmouth, Ohio.
