Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Needless to say, when all was said and done, it was not a good day for the Knights.
The University of Rio Grande enjoyed its highest scoring game of the season, while setting a new program single-game record for shots, in a 16-0 rout of Kentucky Christian University, Thursday night, in River States Conference men's soccer action at a cold and rainy Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm improved to 9-4-3 overall and 7-1 in the RSC with a fourth consecutive victory.
The 16 goals represented the most in a game for Rio Grande since a 20-0 win at Ohio Christian University on Oct. 13, 2022.
Kentucky Christian, which is in its first season as a member of the conference, dropped to 1-12-1 overall and 0-8 in league play.
The Knights failed to get off a shot attempt in the loss, while head coach Scott Morrissey's Rio squad peppered a trio of KCU goal keepers with a school-record 67 shots - 37 of which were on frame.
The RedStorm got a pair of goals from freshman Facundo Rossich (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in the first 4:10 of the contest en route to a 10-0 halftime advantage.
Rossich finished with three goals in the win, as did senior Marti Puigsegur Calvo (Barcelona, Spain) and Luke Tinkler. Calvo also had an assist.
Sophomore Estevao Goncalves (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added two goals and an assist of his own for Rio, while sophomore Hugo Ferreira (Paris, France0 totaled one goal and three assists and freshman Will Perry (Crewe, England) had a goal and an assist.
Senior Justin Jimenez (Alajuela, Costa Rica), junior Tommy Munoz Salazar (San Jose, Costa Rica) and freshman Andre Louro (Lisbon, Portugal) had one goal each, while junior Phillip Mokwa (Duesseldorf, Germany) had two assists and sophomore Jevon Shuriah (Toll Gate, Jamaica) was credited with one assist.
Senior Matheus de Campos (Brasilia, Brazil), who was making his second start of the season, got the win in goal for Rio.
Gavin Evans started and took the loss in goal for KCU, allowing all of the 10 first half markers while making eight saves.
Colin Pennington allowed the final six Rio goals and made eight saves over his 29:59 in net for the Knights, while Andrew Butler saved five shots over the game's final 15:01.
Rio Grande will wrap up regular season play at Oakland City University in a 4:30 p.m. EST kickoff.
Saturday's winner will earn a first-round bye in the RSC Championship, which begins next week.
